The '''Laser Cannon Incident''' was a major military engagement in the [[Vega-Nova War]] located at [[Siege Station|Ilios Research Station]] in western [[Ilios]]. The battle saw the deployment of experimental [[Laser Cannon]]-based [[Destroyer]]s by [[Imperial Nova]], by means of which a small [[Nova]]n force sunk an extremely large [[Vega]]n-allied armada with comparatively few casualties. The battle was the first and only significant usage of such powerful [[Laser Cannon]] arrays on [[Survival]]; even prior to the incident on 15 March, Laser Cannons were already slated for a significant nerf the following evening due to a widespread consensus that they were unbalanced. The Laser Cannon Incident was the most lethal battle of any in [[Horizon's End]] history, with a total of 24 ships being sunk over the course of the 90-minute engagement.

= Context =
On November 9th 2024, the server received an update that included a change reducing Laser Cannon weapon capacitor power drain to 160 from 1600, allowing [[Destroyers]] to fire over 70 of them at a time. The change occurred with little fanfare and was an open secret among a small number of players until the following March, at which point the change's potential became widely recognized. By this time, the [[Vega-Nova War]] had begun, and Imperial Nova opted to use the tactic before its inevitable nerf.

Two days before the battle, the siege station had been captured from Imperial Nova by Vega.

Novan forces had freshly printed 3 12ks that were equipped with laser cannons on the broadside, which at the time of the battle remained extremely powerful. The plan was to bait Vegan forces into deploying a Battlecruiser to counter the 3 12ks, so that it would quickly be sunk by the laser cannons.

The response time from Vegan forces was too great to prevent the siege, meaning the siege was successful, and Vega's mission changed to simply sinking the 3 12ks and separatist support.

Vega and allies rallied to fight the 12ks, bringing an initial fleet of 1 4k, and several 1ks.

Vegans successfully dispatched the 2 separatist 1ks, then turned full focus to the 12ks.

The Novan forces were able to sink 1 4k, and 2 Starfighters over the span of 18 Minutes, before revealing the laser cannons equipped on their ship, sinking an additional 1k using the laser cannons.

Solesey of Vega contracted Lonestar 30,000c to assist Vega in the fight, summoning 1 500 Gunship, piloted by CursedSaturn, 1 4.9k, piloted by XiJinping_, and 1 2k, piloted by eyrzeke.

Vega and allies were able to finish off Thrawn31's 12k.

The 2 remaining Novan 12ks were able to sink another 2k, 1 500 Gunship, and 5 Starfighters.

Thrawn31's 12k wreck had regenerated, and eyrzeke, who had been sunk, navigated to the wreck, and was able to pilot the wreck as a 6.5k, using the wreck to make a last stand against the Novan 12ks, using the remaining functioning laser cannons.

Separatist forces redeployed 1 Starfighter which was also sunk.

The fight continued for an additional 30 minutes after eyrzeke's wreck was sunk, with Vegan-aligned forces losing an additional 1k, 500 Gunship, and Starfighter.

The battle concluded after Vegan forces decided to withdraw, failing to recapture the station or kill Novan forces.

Some time after the battle, server staff refunded most Vega-aligned losses.

Other notable players include [[Crandolf]] and [[EchoOcelot]]. [[Bagelz_]], the leader of the settlement [[Heliopolis]] on [[Lioda]], was originally a member of Starfall. It was a member of [[Radiance]] since 18th August 2024 and was granted a council position (now called Dominion) on 25th November 2024. The settlement was disbanded on 1st January 2025 after it was sold to [[Hybrasil]].

== History ==
The North Star Republic was a predecessor to Starfall. It existed between 1st December 2023 and 7th April 2024 on Lioda.

Several members of Starfall were part of [[texas]] prior to joining Starfall. The Orodruin Caldera was chosen by 5Gigi as location for a settlement for its unique geographic characteristics. The first building, a docking tower for small ships, was completed on 28th August 2024. From there, more buildings were made inside the volcano. The first weeks of the settlement's founding were its most active, with up to 12 active players at a time.

Most of its initial ships were donated by the player [[eyrzeke]] and some are still in use. For a time, Starfall had a seperate settlement for storing its ships, called Qatra_wasteland/qatra_parking. It was founded on 24th September by Redbubba2022, but later integrated into Starfall by Crandolf on 20th October.

On 2nd September, Flaming_Hill was renamed to Starfall. September saw a major decrease in active players for the settlement. Several large construction and infrastructure projects were started in October and November of 2024. Starfall has mainained a positive relationship with its neighbour, [[Zanthor]], led by [[Kman_the_AWESOME]]. Both settlements were increased in size following the Qatra redraw in late September.

Starfall's entire existence was during the [[Long Peace]]. After a long period of relative inactivity, 5Gigi made a post offering to sell the settlement for 20,000 credits. [[Lonestar]] and [[Hybrasil]] made offers, with Hybrasil eventually buying Orodruin Caldera. The Orodruin Caldera was resold to [[WitherBlood07]] for 80,000 credits on 9th February 2025, who founded the settlement [[Olympus]].

== Politics ==
The internal leadership of the settlement was completely done by 5Gigi, although every player was allowed pursue their own path, with no obligation towards the settlement. The settlement was mostly focused on mining and construction, but played a small role in galactic politics. As a part of Radiance and the Ilios Alliance, ships and pilots from Starfall participated in some sieges and conflicts. Starfall had a short dispute with [[Ekatera]] over a fallen territory on [[Turms]].

Pearlescent froglights were the preferred light source. Starfall's building style was sometimes been associated with the nation [[Shadow]], although the two are not connected.

The settlements unique geography greatly influenced its industry and buildings. The initial docking tower was built on an island inside the volcanic caldera, with the rest of the city built in a circle around it. To the east of the center was a small, green town made for the players of Zanthor. Landing areas for large ships were to the north, while a small industrial complex were to the south. For a time when Starfall had ambitions of becoming a trade city, a potential trade tower was partially constructed to the west.

Starfall had amassed considerable material wealth from mining and scavenging old settlements and shipwrecks. Two texan [[Mastodon-class]] light freighters were regularly used for various purposes. Starfall specialized in [[uranium]] enrichment, given that the resource is very common on Qatra. The settlement's financial capital was limited, relying on crating and commissions. Most of its credits were shared between 5Gigi and EchoOcelot.

The battle saw the deployment of experimental [[Laser Cannon]]-based [[Destroyer]]s by [[Imperial Nova]], by means of which a small [[Nova]]n force sunk an extremely large [[Vega]]n-allied armada with comparatively few casualties. The battle was the first and only significant usage of such powerful [[Laser Cannon]] arrays on [[Survival]]; even prior to the incident on 15 March, Laser Cannons were already slated for a significant nerf the following evening due to a widespread consensus that they were unbalanced. On November 9th 2024, the server received an update that included a change reducing Laser Cannon weapon capacitor power drain to 160 from 1600, allowing [[Destroyers]] to fire over 70 of them at a time. By this time, the [[Vega-Nova War]] had begun, and Imperial Nova opted to use the tactic before its inevitable nerf.

Novan forces had freshly printed 3 12ks that were equipped with laser cannons on the broadside, which at the time of the battle remained extremely powerful. The plan was to bait Vegan forces into deploying a Battlecruiser to counter the 3 12ks, so that it would quickly be sunk by the laser cannons.

The response time from Vegan forces was too great to prevent the siege, meaning the siege was successful, and Vega's mission changed to simply sinking the 3 12ks and separatist support.

Vega and allies rallied to fight the 12ks, bringing an initial fleet of 1 4k, and several 1ks.

Vegans successfully dispatched the 2 separatist 1ks, then turned full focus to the 12ks.

The Novan forces were able to sink 1 4k, and 2 Starfighters over the span of 18 Minutes, before revealing the laser cannons equipped on their ship, sinking an additional 1k using the laser cannons.

Solesey of Vega contracted Lonestar 30,000c to assist Vega in the fight, summoning 1 500 Gunship, piloted by CursedSaturn, 1 4.9k, piloted by XiJinping_, and 1 2k, piloted by eyrzeke.

Vega and allies were able to finish off Thrawn31's 12k.

The 2 remaining Novan 12ks were able to sink another 2k, 1 500 Gunship, and 5 Starfighters.

Thrawn31's 12k wreck had regenerated, and eyrzeke, who had been sunk, navigated to the wreck, and was able to pilot the wreck as a 6.5k, using the wreck to make a last stand against the Novan 12ks, using the remaining functioning laser cannons.

Separatist forces redeployed 1 Starfighter which was also sunk.

The fight continued for an additional 30 minutes after eyrzeke's wreck was sunk, with Vegan-aligned forces losing an additional 1k, 500 Gunship, and Starfighter.

The North Star Republic was a predecessor to Starfall. It existed between 1st December 2023 and 7th April 2024 on Lioda.

Several members of Starfall were part of [[texas]] prior to joining Starfall. The Orodruin Caldera was chosen by 5Gigi as location for a settlement for its unique geographic characteristics. The first building, a docking tower for small ships, was completed on 28th August 2024. From there, more buildings were made inside the volcano. The first weeks of the settlement's founding were its most active, with up to 12 active players at a time.

Most of its initial ships were donated by the player [[eyrzeke]] and some are still in use. For a time, Starfall had a seperate settlement for storing its ships, called Qatra_wasteland/qatra_parking. It was founded on 24th September by Redbubba2022, but later integrated into Starfall by Crandolf on 20th October.

On 2nd September, Flaming_Hill was renamed to Starfall. September saw a major decrease in active players for the settlement. Several large construction and infrastructure projects were started in October and November of 2024. Starfall has mainained a positive relationship with its neighbour, [[Zanthor]], led by [[Kman_the_AWESOME]]. Both settlements were increased in size following the Qatra redraw in late September.

Starfall's entire existence was during the [[Long Peace]]. After a long period of relative inactivity, 5Gigi made a post offering to sell the settlement for 20,000 credits. Pearlescent froglights were the preferred light source. Starfall's building style was sometimes been associated with the nation [[Shadow]], although the two are not connected.

The settlements unique geography greatly influenced its industry and buildings. The initial docking tower was built on an island inside the volcanic caldera, with the rest of the city built in a circle around it. To the east of the center was a small, green town made for the players of Zanthor. Landing areas for large ships were to the north, while a small industrial complex were to the south. For a time when Starfall had ambitions of becoming a trade city, a potential trade tower was partially constructed to the west.

== Economy ==
Starfall had amassed considerable material wealth from mining and scavenging old settlements and shipwrecks. Two texan [[Mastodon-class]] light freighters were regularly used for various purposes. Starfall specialized in [[uranium]] enrichment, given that the resource is very common on Qatra. The settlement's financial capital was limited, relying on crating and comissions. Most of its credits were shared between 5Gigi and EchoOcelot.

== Military ==
Most of Starfall's military ships were donated or bought from texas. This includeded two destroyers, two frigates and a corvette. A recovered [[Anduria]] [[corvette]] was added to its arsenal on October 23rd 2024. A group of 1365-sized gunships designed by 5Gigi were the most common military ships in the settlement, although the "zekeship" frigates were used more.
